Deporting Beneficiaries Of Obama's Immigration Action Would Cost $50.3 Billion: Report

WASHINGTON -- Deporting the estimated 5 million undocumented immigrants who could benefit from deportation-relief policies that Republicans are trying to block would have a hefty price, according to a report released Monday from the left-leaning Center for American Progress.
The report estimates a cost of about $50.3 billion -- about $10,070 per person -- to deport those eligible for President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration, which are under fire from Republicans. Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/23/obama-immigration_n_6738984.html

AUSTIN, Texas—The Obama administration on Monday asked a Texas federal judge to allow it to continue implementing the president’s immigration plan, which the judge temporarily blocked last week.

When American Expats Don’t Want Their Kids to Have U.S. Citizenship

In 2011, a dual American-Australian citizen gave birth to her first child in Perth, Australia, where she lives with her Australian husband.
Jessica, who asked that her last name not be used, says she initially looked forward to getting her infant son an American passport. But after considering the implications of American citizenship, including the possibility of her son being drafted or taxed by a country where he may never live, she and her husband decided against applying for the moment. BREAKING OVERNIGHT: Federal Judge Blocks Obama's Executive Action on Illegal Immigration

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen of Texas has temporarily blocked President Obama's executive action on illegal immigration by granting a request from 26 states to allow the courts to look at its constitutionality before it is implemented. The lawsuit is being headed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
"This case examines complex issues relating to immigration which necessarily involve questions of federalism, separation of powers, and the ability and advisability, if any, of the Judiciary to hear and resolve such a dispute," the temporary injunction, which was issued late Monday night, states. Illegal Immigration 2015: Asylum Seekers In US Worry About Obama's Executive Actions For Undocumented Immigrants

When President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration take effect this week, there will still be tens of thousands of backlogged applications for people seeking asylum in the U.S. The excess of applicants is expected to worsen with the ongoing crises in Syria, Iraq and Ukraine. That outlook has caused some to worry that they’ll be less of a priority behind the several million undocumented immigrants who will be eligible for the expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which begins Wednesday. H1B Season Is Already at Peakload, According to Susan Cho Figenshau, P.C.

H1B filings for the 2016 fiscal year won't begin until April 1, 2015, but Susan Cho Figenshau, P.C. says her firm has already started preparing cases due to unusually high--and unusually early--demand.
“H1B cap cases are the bread and butter of temporary employment visas for foreign-born persons who recently graduated from USA bachelor's degree or advanced degree programs," Figenshau explained. "However, the U.S. government limits the number of petitions which can be approved each fiscal year.” Read more: http://interact.stltoday.com/pr/business/PR012215100220056

Immigration Reform News 2015: 5.46 Million Work Permits Issued To Non-Citizens From 2009 To 2014 – Report

The U.S. government issued 5.46 million work permits to non-immigrant foreigners from 2009 to 2014, according to a conservative think-tank.
The Center for Immigration Studies, which describes itself as "low-immigration, pro-immigrant," said the numbers were "above and beyond the number of new green card and temporary worker admissions in those years."
According to a statement issued by the Center's director, Jessica Vaughan, the data was obtained from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services through a Freedom of Information Act request. House and Senate Republicans clash on immigration

House and Senate Republicans have spent years training their ire on Sen. Harry Reid and President Barack Obama.
But now they’re clashing with each other.
And that poses a challenge for GOP senators’ initial strategy for escaping their immigration dilemma, which involves convincing their House counterparts that their aggressive attacks on Obama’s policies stand no chance of becoming law. House Republicans so far aren’t buying it, saying Republican senators need to fight harder.

Keegan: Could American students ace civics questions on U.S. citizenship test?

Arizona recently became the first state in the country to enact a law requiring students to correctly answer 60 out of 100 questions on the civics portion of the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate from high school. The Joe Foss Institute, a primary supporter of such legislation, expects more than a dozen states to follow suit this year. The institute, named for a World War II fighter pilot who was awarded the Medal of Honor, has set a goal of having all 50 states adopt the same requirement by 2017, the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

US government cancels thousands of immigration hearings; delays could extend past 2019

SAN ANTONIO -- Thousands of immigrants seeking legalization through the U.S. court system have had their hearings canceled and are being told by the government that it may be 2019 or later before their futures are resolved.
Some immigration lawyers fear the delay will leave their clients at risk of deportation as evidence becomes dated, witnesses disappear, sponsoring relatives die and dependent children become adults. Read more: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2015/02/us_government_cancels_thousand.html
