U.S. visas to six Muslim nations drop after Supreme Court backs travel ban

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In the first two months after a June Supreme Court ruling allowed partial implementation of President Donald Trump’s travel ban, visas issued on average each month to citizens of six countries targeted by the order were 18 percent lower compared to the month prior to the ban, a Reuters analysis of government data shows.
The 3,268 visas issued in July and 3,884 visas issued in August to citizens of the six majority-Muslim countries were down from 4,351 issued in June. The July figure was lower than the monthly average at any point since 2007, when an average of 3,080 visas per month were issued to those countries. The Trump administration just made its travel ban permanent

President Donald Trump issued an executive order over the weekend that restricts travel to the US from more countries than any of the travel bans that have come before it, effectively banning almost all travel from eight countries — six of which have majority Muslim populations — indefinitely.
Come October 18, nationals of Chad, Iran, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, Somalia, and North Korea will be more or less barred entry to the United States. Each nation under this ban is subject to its own travel restrictions, but the order overwhelmingly bars tourists, families of American residents, and even those seeking medical visas from entering the United States. Those who already have permanent residency or already hold visas are exempted from the ban — but cannot renew their visas after they expire. And now the Supreme Court has canceled oral arguments against the travel ban, until both sides file new briefs on the impact this permanent policy would have. Why immigrants are a financial boon for the U.S.

Immigration restrictionists give a number of reasons why they want fewer people settling in the U.S. Most of these reasons don’t hold up under scrutiny.
For example, the best available data says that immigrants don’t take native-born Americans’ jobs, or drive down their wages; indeed, it’s more likely that skilled immigrants boost the earnings of the native-born. In the U.S. and in Canada, immigration tends to reduce crime. And both history and data show that in the U.S., immigrants assimilate successfully into the local culture and social fabric.

US: Visa issuance restricted for 3 African countries

(Ecofin Agency) - Trump’s administration issued a visa restriction order for citizens from 4 countries worldwide, including three in Africa. These are Cambodia, Eritrea, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The law entered into effect since September 13, 2017.

The United States blames those countries of not cooperating in the framework of repatriation of their citizens living irregularly in the US. According to Washington, the expulsion orders hit more than 5576 citizens from those countries. In details, there are 2137 Guineans, 1900 Cambodians, 839 citizens from Sierra Leone and about 700 Eritreans.
One of the major reason Washington adopted this measure was the lack of documents that can help US government send them back to their home countries. Read more:http://www.ecofinagency.com/public-management/1509-37435-us-visa-issuance-restricted-for-3-african-countries

Immigration: U.S. benefits from immigrants

Immigrants are the source of a nation’s creativity, diversity and initiative. America is an idea of universal aspirations for all people who contribute with opportunity for its uplift. Scratch into the family tree of most Americans, and there is likely a fairly recent connection to an immigrant. Such people came here to improve their lives with enterprise and industry that then helped the larger society.
There will always be racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry in society not only in the U.S. but in other nations around the world. Those who believe in such ideas and marched to advance them in Charlottesville were properly opposed by those who saw that threats to specific groups were dangers to the promise of America. America abolished slavery simply because it had been evil, not to oppress a states’ rights tradition of the South. DNA Dilemma: Baby Can’t Get US Citizenship

BRENTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Andrew Dvash-Banks is a United States citizen. His husband is not. Elad is from Israel.
The dads married in Canada seven years ago.
“We had our beautiful twin boys Aidan and Ethan through surrogacy in Canada because that’s where we were living at the time,” said Elad.

The twins share an egg donor but one child has the DNA of Andrew and the other the DNA of Elad.
“We really wanted one kid that is biologically related to each one of us just to have this family that is everyone a part of the family,” said Elad.
When the fathers decided to return to Andrew’s home in Los Angeles, they ran into a problem. Read more: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2017/09/06/baby-cant-get-us-citizenship/

Fixing the US Immigration System: Back to the Future

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced that the Trump administration is rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, throwing the future fate of the “Dreamers” up in the air. This is an opportune moment to look at the immigration issue in a broader context.
Immigration law in the United States has changed greatly over time. Over time, it has moved from open borders to race-based rules to skill-based preferences.

Did Obama allow a ‘back door’ to citizenship through DACA?

“Now, let’s be clear — this is not amnesty, this is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship.”
— President Barack Obama, announcing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, June 15, 2012
“Data Indicate Unauthorized Immigrants Exploited Loophole to Gain Legal Status, Pathway to Citizenship”
— headline of news release by Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), Sept. 1, 2017
One criticism of DACA, which the Trump administration has said it will rescind unless Congress acts to make it permanent, is that it has allowed unauthorized immigrants to exploit the system and gain U.S. citizenship, despite former President Barack Obama’s statement that it would not do so.

Trump administration ends DACA, with 6-month delay

The Trump administration on Tuesday announced the “orderly wind down” of the Obama-era program that gave a deportation reprieve to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children – putting pressure on Congress to come up with a replacement.
“I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents. But we must also recognize that we are a nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws,” President Trump said, in a lengthy written statement explaining the decision.
