Immigration Reform News 2015: 5.46 Million Work Permits Issued To Non-Citizens From 2009 To 2014 – Report

The U.S. government issued 5.46 million work permits to non-immigrant foreigners from 2009 to 2014, according to a conservative think-tank.

The Center for Immigration Studies, which describes itself as "low-immigration, pro-immigrant," said the numbers were "above and beyond the number of new green card and temporary worker admissions in those years."

According to a statement issued by the Center's director, Jessica Vaughan, the data was obtained from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services through a Freedom of Information Act request. House and Senate Republicans clash on immigration

House and Senate Republicans have spent years training their ire on Sen. Harry Reid and President Barack Obama.
But now they’re clashing with each other.

And that poses a challenge for GOP senators’ initial strategy for escaping their immigration dilemma, which involves convincing their House counterparts that their aggressive attacks on Obama’s policies stand no chance of becoming law. House Republicans so far aren’t buying it, saying Republican senators need to fight harder.

Keegan: Could American students ace civics questions on U.S. citizenship test?

Arizona recently became the first state in the country to enact a law requiring students to correctly answer 60 out of 100 questions on the civics portion of the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate from high school. The Joe Foss Institute, a primary supporter of such legislation, expects more than a dozen states to follow suit this year. The institute, named for a World War II fighter pilot who was awarded the Medal of Honor, has set a goal of having all 50 states adopt the same requirement by 2017, the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

US government cancels thousands of immigration hearings; delays could extend past 2019

SAN ANTONIO -- Thousands of immigrants seeking legalization through the U.S. court system have had their hearings canceled and are being told by the government that it may be 2019 or later before their futures are resolved.

It’s Time to Prepare H-1B Visa Petitions for Fiscal Year 2016

This alert is a reminder of the rapidly approaching April 1, 2015 deadline for the filing of H-1B visa petitions for Fiscal Year 2016. Petitions for the new fiscal year, which starts on October 1, 2015, will be accepted by the government beginning April 1, 2015. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will continue to accept new H-1B petitions after April 1, 2015, but only until the H-1B cap is reached. As soon as possible, we encourage you to identify any employees who may require H-1B sponsorship. This year we again expect the cap to be reached as early as the first week of April. Once the H-1B cap has been reached, employers will be unable to file new cap-subject H-1Bpetitions until April 1, 2016.

Fears of immigration policy change triggers new wave of Cuban migrants

HAVANA — President Obama’s opening to Cuba has accelerated a surge in Cuban migration to the United States, the latest U.S. statistics show, as many on the island grow worried that America’s long-standing immigration benefits for Cubans are now in jeopardy.
Last month the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted 481 Cubans in rickety boats and rafts, a 117 percent increase from December 2013. But the boaters account for only a fraction of those attempting to reach the United States. At the Miami airport and ports of entry along the Mexican border, the number of Cubans who arrived seeking refuge jumped to 8,624 during the last three months of 2014, a 65 percent increase from the previous year.
