The automatic right of people born on American soil to citizenship
rests on the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868.
The amendment nullifed the 1857 Dred Scott ruling by the Supreme Court that denied citizenship to African-Americans.
It reads: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and
subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States
and the state wherein they reside."
In an 1898 case, the court interpreted the amendment to give
citizenship to the San Francisco-born son of Chinese nationals. The
ruling established judicial precedent ensuring anyone born in the U.S.,
