Immigrants are the source of a nation’s creativity, diversity and initiative. America is an idea of universal aspirations for all people who contribute with opportunity for its uplift. Scratch into the family tree of most Americans, and there is likely a fairly recent connection to an immigrant. Such people came here to improve their lives with enterprise and industry that then helped the larger society.
There will always be racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry in society not only in the U.S. but in other nations around the world. Those who believe in such ideas and marched to advance them in Charlottesville were properly opposed by those who saw that threats to specific groups were dangers to the promise of America. America abolished slavery simply because it had been evil, not to oppress a states’ rights tradition of the South.
