Deadline approaches to submit online entry for Diversity Visa Lottery

You have until noon on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to submit your online entry for the Diversity Visa Lottery — which gives green cards to 50,000 randomly selected people from countries with relatively low immigration to the U.S.
Natives of most countries qualify — except those from Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom and its dependent territories aside from Northern Ireland.
Those born in Northern Ireland as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are eligible. Winners get their visas during the 2017 fiscal year. Immigration report finds systemic detention failures

Inspections at immigrant detention centers across the country lack legitimacy and are carried out with little oversight or transparency, a new report by two pro-immigrant advocacy groups charges.

The report, released Wednesday by the organizations National Immigration Justice Center and Detention Watch Network, is based on documents obtained through years of litigation and Freedom of Information Act requests examining 105 immigrant detention facilities nationwide. US visa applicants warned of online scams

Applicants to a US Green Card scheme, which opened earlier this month, have been warned against online fraudsters.

The Diversity Visa Lottery opened on October 1st. It will issue 50,000 visas, with a maximum of 3,500 going to Ireland.

Automatic right of American-born children to U.S. citizenship — which Donald Trump wants to end — ratified in 1868

The automatic right of people born on American soil to citizenship rests on the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868.

The amendment nullifed the 1857 Dred Scott ruling by the Supreme Court that denied citizenship to African-Americans.
It reads: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the state wherein they reside."
In an 1898 case, the court interpreted the amendment to give citizenship to the San Francisco-born son of Chinese nationals. The ruling established judicial precedent ensuring anyone born in the U.S., except for children of foreign diplomats, is a citizen. Left Out of Visa Waiver Program, Polish Visitors Ask: 'Why Not Us?

Born in the U.S.A.—Citizenship and the Constitution

In your editorial “Born in the U.S.A.” (Aug. 21) you assert that the language of the Fourteenth Amendment is “straightforward.” It is indeed, but it doesn’t mean what you claim. The amendment sets out two requirements for automatic citizenship, not just one. A person must be born in the U.S. and subject to its jurisdiction, according to the text. Those who drafted the language were quite explicit; the latter phrase meant subject to the “complete” jurisdiction, “[n]ot owing allegiance to anybody else.” As Sen. Jacob Howard explained at the time, the Citizenship Clause excludes not only Indians but “persons born in the U.S. who are foreigners, aliens, [or] who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers.” In other words, the phrase didn’t mean what they called “partial” or “territorial” jurisdiction such as applies to “sojourners” who are mere temporary visitors, and it certainly didn’t apply to those who were unlawfully present in the county.
